A Whirlwind year.....

Dearest Family and Friends,

What a year this has been! As 2009 draws to a close, I anxiously look forward to 2010. 2009 was one of the biggest rollercoaster rides, and I am glad it is over. I can just feel it... 2010 has alot coming... and God has a few surprises I think-- some good ones.

Looking back, I thank you all for prayers and encouragement as this truly was a tough year. For a majority of the year I had a couple of jobs that were complete nightmares, and that ended well with my current job at Cole Chrysler Dodge Mazda in SLO. I surprisingly love it. I really like the people I work with, very low drama, and dependable. I am adding to my skill set, making ends meet, and continuing to look ahead. For now, I know I am blessed... it took two bad jobs to get here since returning home.

As we know I returned last year after a four month stint following graduation in San Diego. Those were some tough months dealing with unbeknownst to me, depression, and coming to terms with it once knowing it was something I was battling (yet again). It was a long season, and I definitely have not walked away from that dark season unchanged or affected in the long term. It changed relationships, and it is something that will always be in the back of my mind. My relationship with God has completely changed... and for the better. I am continually reminded that his mercies are new EVERYDAY! For pretty much my whole life being a "Christian" was mapped out by other people. I had to live a certain way... other peoples convictions had better be my conviction. If I was not super conservative and pretty much taking the legalistic approach to my faith and fearing God to be this harsh judger, then I was not living at all. But through situations, this past year, and the amazing people God has put in my life (roommates, friends, family, my church family), I know that God is so much more than that. I am done living my Christian faith the way other see fit, but am truly making it the relationship it should be. I know how it looks as I did it before... and people thought I was living too "carefree". I have learned a lot about me and who God is once again this year... and as I head into 2010 that is on the forefront of my mind.

2009 brought a lot of heart ache with the halting of some relationships or bringing some of them to a close. Some because I was in destruction mode at the beginning of the year just coming to terms with my situation and dealing with depression. Here I am now.... 95% better than I was... but still have those moments that I have to make the decision to not let it get me down. As I have grieved some relationships not meant to be a long season, and some relationships were even restored this year, and some have strengthened beyond more than I could have imagined. God brought new people into my life whom have blessed me and I am one very lucky girl to have them in my life. I do pray 2010 brings more healing and reconciliation that the end of 2009 has started.

The middle to now of 2009 have been anything but calm. This summer was a tough summer for my roommate Kristi, and I think you for keeping her family in your prayers as her family lost both grandparents in a very short amount of time of the other, and that is a lot of one family to take on. This year I have battled the weirdest physical ailments, and having to adapt my diet for it has been challenging, but nonetheless after almost a year it is more under control than ever. It is a candida allergy, but the cause of why I have it is still known and there is hope it is not permanent, and it has been shown with how I don't always react when I am eating those foods that sometimes argue with my body :) So maybe as things are looking up in all other areas... this will too. The prayers for these things have definitely been felt, and I appreciate them so much. I definitely love my roommates for accommodating this as much as they have, because it makes me a lot more high maintenance than I would like to be. What else happened in 2009?? Oh.... I turned 25. It was definitely a hard birthday and the weeks leading up to it were well.... ahhhhhh..... I just never thought this is where I would be in my life at 25. It also affirmed that in every aspect I am an adult. I should have all my ducks in a row by now. I should have some amazing career job, focus on getting married, and being just somewhere completely different than where I am. And someone came along side me.... maybe it was Genessa (how I love this girl), who reminded me "I am exactly where God wants me to be at this point in my life". And I am realizing that more so. I have a lot to be thankful for in having a college degree, in having wonderful roommates, and great church family... and I live in one beautiful place. So, as I regroup and approach 2010 being 25 for most of it so much I know awaits. I have big plans.... if you haven't heard. Following dreams and goals and it is going to be a wild ride.... all in God's timing.... so what is it??

I never talk about the things I dream about I just pursue them, and if they don't happen I just let down myself and not everyone else around me. But this is what's going on: I am pursuing jobs... out of state! I know scary! But I am also still keeping my eyes open for here in California, because you just never know. But for YEARS it has been on my heart to live in NYC. Just for the real change of scenery, being close to people I love in NY, and getting my career going. I have nothing to lose, if it doesn't work, I could come back. I have been submitting resumes EVERYWHERE and looking at churches I can connect with. I have my aunts supporting me so much with this and encouraging me. I even have a blog about it (I know.... dorky....), and so it really is showing this journey I am on.

But while I remain in beautiful California in wonderful Arroyo Grande, what is going on?: Continuing to serve with my church in Childrens' and Youth Ministries, and I am loving. They have been such a blessing to me. They are all great kids. The youth retreat was wonderful and brought us closer together as a group, the 2's and 3's kids are growing so fast, the Youth Christmas party was a blast. I also was in choir this season for the Christmas season and it was so much fun and great to connect with others in the church I wouldn't normally. 2010 will continue the bible study we just started at the end of this year being led by my wonderful friend Megan. "TrueFaced". It is making us closer friends, and changing how we approach our relationships and that's with God included. Also, 2010 brings me taking on one more thing: Financial Peace University, which I take starting in January. Great Dave Ramsey series, and just giving my finances to the Lord and being a better steward with my money.

So that has been the year.... well the highlights. I still have caitlynlawton.blogspot.com where updates happen somewhat regularly. And also the new nychereicome.wordpress.com. Updates for me and you on my journey in making the goals happen. I can feel it that 2010 is going to be a great year...

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement this year. Sticking by me in some of the low points and cheering me on in the high points. I pray you all had wonderful Christmas' with family and friends, counting your blessings, and looking forward to what is in store. I hope you all have a wonderful new year. When you get the chance.... I would love to hear how YOU are doing, and what is on the horizon for you!

Blessings and Joy,

The Season We Are In

What a wonderful season this has been. The feel has been different, and I do think the economy has something to do with it. As 2009 comes to a close... I look back at this year. And the great majority of it for me was not so good. It may be ending on a much better note, and 2010 will start one a great one. Making plans and continuing to meet my goals. I am applying for more and more jobs in my degree field, and looking all over California, besides San Diego, and ultimately where my heart is yearning... New York. So prayer for God's provision and timing, and that my time would be productive.

So Christmas:

The Adult Choir program went off without a hitch and ended with a party. So much fun, and truly love the fellowship God has placed me in. Wednesday we had the 1st of many to come of Christmas Adam (get it.... cause Adam came before Eve... oh we are so so cleaver). Once again, Megan helped Kristi with an amazing dinner of Goose, potatoes, Russian something pudding, pear with a port sauce.... and great friends. Since it is Christmas break, this also means Ali is home for the break from San Carlos (where she is now living in teaching). Despite the distance her and I truly have grown so much closer as friends, and I am so blessed to have her in my life. Christmas Eve.... busy. I worked til 2, had to do last minute Christmas shopping (Thanks Christiana for tagging along), and 2 Christmas Eve services where a small portion of us from the choir sang for the services. What a blessing to see so many new faces! Christmas Day brought my family up from their home in Frazier Park, minus my brother. I prepared my first all by myself holiday meal.... Tri-Tip, Sweet potatoes, and Tamales (I did order the Tamales),and made Apple Pie and Fudge. All worth the hard work, and was fun to host. Christmas night I went down to Ali's family in Santa Maria to just hang out, and resumed hang out last night by getting some Panera (location in Santa Maria now... we are moving up in the world), and rented The Proposal (I love that movie). Great week full of friends, shopping, and fellowship with family and friends. Roommates we did Christmas together plus Brian, and it was so much fun. I am truly blessed with amazing roommates, friends, and the ability to be able to gift others. I am blessed to be working, and I am blessed to be overall healthy. As 2010 comes..... it is gonna be a BIG year. I can just feel it.

(don't forget I also have: http://nychereicome.wordpress.com)

Merry Christmas to each of you and a wonderful New Year!

Blessings and Joy,
Caitlyn

Progressive Dinner Recap!

Last night was so much fun! So us youth leaders put together a progressive dinner for our Jr. High and High School students and it was so much fun! A big thank you to Ken and Arline Munson, The Kirks, and Carl and Karen Bockhahn for opening up their homes, cooking wonderful food, for loud 20 teenagers. We were so blessed by it.

The night started out with a photo scavenger hunt that took us to Ryan Olsen's living room for a picture with his "Oh Tannenbaum", to United Methodist Church, AGPD, Lighting Joe's in the Village, to Walmart, and to the first house. Appetizers at The Munsons. They are such a sweet couple. They are Heather's grandparents (Heather is the youth pastor's wife). Then we went to the Kirks in Nipomo at the Barn and they made a wonderful dinner, and then to The Bockhahn's (commonly known as the Homestead a.k.a Kristi's parents house), for dessert and white elephant gift exchange. Such a great time and a lot of fun, and more times to really come together as a group and celebrate this wonderful season we are in. Please keep our ministry in prayer as we head into the New Year and all that God has in store for us.

December Tidbits

December has had lots of crazy with busyness and whatnot, and now maybe things will slow down (fat chance with Christmas about 2 weeks away)! Anyway... I have also been keeping up on my other specialized blog: nychereicome.wordpress.com.... so if you have not checked it out... then you are missing some hopeful changes to come, and then you will be shocked when it happens :)

Not really. But it has been a great place to organize my thoughts, continue to improve my writing skills, and become a little more creative and expressive with my thought life.

Update: Drive-Thru Nativity this past weekend was a wonderful community outreach opportunity with close to 1300 people coming through on the weekend. The biggest blessing to me in it all was hearing people tell the story of Jesus' life as they drove through (since they had their windows down), and it was such a blessing to hear these conversations happening. I hope they were happening in the cars for those who didn't know Jesus and that it was of great ministry to their hearts-- especially in this season.

Media News: My friend Brian King (I have to detail which one since I know a few great guys named Brian).... well he has started this awesome website/business called Your Daily Jingle (yourdailyjingle.com), and 20% of his profits will go to a charity of your choice. And he will write you a unique song. I wonder if he realizes that this could be his break into showbiz. People need tv commercial and radio spot jingles all the time. Hmmmm.... so, get a personal jingle written and sung on your behalf and help out a wonderful cause at the same time. You can also on Twitter and Facebook!

Prayer: For my brother Perry. Has such a hardened heart and there is so much deep and buried anger that has such a grip in his life. He has no joy, direction with life, and is living with the rose colored glasses on. There seems to be no fruit in his life, and he definitely does not see Jesus for who He truly is. So prayer for Him to truly repent and come to Jesus and for God to remove his rebellious heart. Its been a hard few months with him and my family so prayer for that as well.

Other than that: Things are good, no complaints. I sure am enjoying my favorite time of the year. I hope this time of year is a blessing as we remember who truly give us life and how HIS BIRTH is the only reason we have a chance! Praise Jesus! He truly is the reason for this season!

Great Speaking Engagement Opportunity

I was so encouraged last night! New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach hosted a special speaker. Michael Franzese. He was amazing. A little about him... he was apart of the mob. The Colombo Family. #18 of 100 richest mob families known to date. He walked away from it all literally risking his life after coming to the Lord. His 3 years in prison and the life he walked away from and into.. such an incredible story. Look him up if you can!! Wonderful guy! If he is speaking near you-- go!

Small Retreat Recap

This weekend God did some amazing things for our youth kids. We took 17 students up to Emmanuel Heights in Creston, and it was so wonderful. We combined our Jr. High and High Schoolers and it was worth it. Nathan was the speaker this weekend and it was on topics that even us leaders were able to relate to and contemplate. The cool thing was the amount of times we met in small groups, which brought unity to our group and the high school girls I had were wonderful. I got to know some of them so much better, and just get closer to them. They also keep me up with the times of new slang, and the fashion statements. The girls were so real this weekend with us and so open. I am reminded how tough high school really was and just the overwhelming life we as people lead, even from that age. Constantly bombarded with demands of the world to be up on the latest trends, the world is one big noise from music, television, internet. This weekend was fasting from all those things. Spending free time playing card games such as "Poopy Head" or canoeing in the pond, or hiking around the hills in Creston. Absolutely beautiful.... and the silence at times was so deafening. I am so blessed by our youth and so blessed to see growth in our ministry and unity continuing. Our retreat's theme was "Desert", and our spiritual lives having those moments and those slumps and how we handle them. Gosh, how I was able to relate and those moments of dryness and complacency. It was just cool to see it all come to discussion and seeing our kids have such a desire to go through those things and want to be filled. They want to be overflowing, but are so overwhelmed with life commitments with school, drama, sports, and that God becomes this after thought or they are so self conscious, or they lack the faith or the strength or the boldness. We have kids who have dealt with alot, and I think it is something to be reminded of.... spiritual warfare is happening to them as they are continuing to be molded. I was reminded during a game of Angels and Demons that so much comes at them that seems right, and has the appearance of right, and they follow this deceptive path, and it leads to destruction. I pray hard for them that the Lord would protect them from the enemy leading them away. I know God is so much bigger than anything that Satan can throw their way! I appreciate the prayers for this past weekend. They are appreciated by all us leaders. And your continued prayers just for the ministry and the kids would be wonderful!

If We Only Have RIGHT NOW....

Big things are definitely on the horizon, and my anticipation for them couldn't be anymore peaked than they are right now. I see changes all around me from friends making plans to travel the world, and some making career changes, and then there is me.... making plans to uproot and follow my long time goal and dream to live and work in the Big Apple. I want to be in a place of opportunity. Opportunity for personal and professional development and growth. I want a place where there are opportunities to make a difference in people's lives everyday. I want to bring light, joy, and God's love. Not through beating someone down with John 3:16-- but genuinely love them and see them as people who can live for so much more for the party scene, the drug scene.... however God can use those circumstances in someones life to help others get out of the similar rut. I want to be a part of something big. I want to make an impact. As I sit around and wonder "I am 25-- is THIS it?".... I want to be able to tell myself "No-- there is so much more, each and everyday. Capture it!". And I know that I can. I know I am driven and passionate about the life I have, and the life to come. I know that 25 is a big milestone, but so are life milestones. Making a name for myself. Not having just 15 minutes of fame, and even being okay with doing something impacting- and not getting noticed. Life starts now. It will always stop now. There is no end. I am here today... the only day I am guaranteed. Tomorrow is not promised to me, nor is an hour from now. So what will I do with right now. Plan for tomorrow yes.... expect it.... sure? Depend on it... no. Life each day like it is your last. Why not?! What would you do if that is how you lived your life? How do you think it would change your life?

Something More

Being 25 has some perks and then not so much. At 25 you can rent a car at a lower rate, you are seen as a true adult (which also has its downsides), and..... well that about does it for that end. Then there is being asked "You are 25, so what are you going to do with the rest of your life?", or "Why aren't you married or ready to have kids?" or.... the other day "yeah, you look about 25 with the lines and wrinkles around your eyes".

I want something more from life than working at a car dealership, living in a state in severe financial crisis (since the days of Pete Wilson and Grey Davis). I want to be able to get out of debt, have tangible items to show how hard I have worked. I want to know what else is there.... or is this it? I feel like it is interesting that without mentioning anything first to my roommates they both have this "ready to go" feeling of going somewhere else. One is wanting to go into research and the other to teach overseas, and I am ready to move 2,800 miles away... once the job falls into place. I apply for so many jobs per week from private firms to ABC to bigger companies and surrounding areas.... all out of California. I want something bigger, be something bigger, and go. I have had this itch for years. The difference for San Diego were my circumstances and reasons (which at the core were not good ones).

Obstacles: I can't move anywhere without a job in place. So prayer for that obstacles would not be the driving force preventing my moving ahead and moving forward. I don't have a specific time goal yet, but next Fall.... I would like to have made major progress.

I am NYC bound!

Is THIS it?

As I continue to follow my heart I always wonder: "Is this it?" I know I am following Christ, but in all of it.... is this life? Work, Church, and sleep. Nothing more. Once you reach a goal, then what? As I pursue one dream and goal I have had for about five years now... I wonder "what if I achieve it?" what comes after that? I have made a little progress in hearing back from some firms in NYC, and we shall see what happens. I feel like this could be the right time. Kim and Kristi are also looking to do other things outside of the Central Coast. One in research and the other teaching overseas. Maybe this next year to come will be a big year for all 3 of us! Please be in prayer for all 3 of us.... this is a time of thinking, praying, transition, and trying to end one chapter in life, and begin a new.

Battling Inner Demons

When the past smacks you dead in the face, it is not necessarily something you are prepared for. Even if you think you are. You aren't. Last weekend I accompanied Kristi on driving down south so she could attend a wedding of a dear friend of hers and spend time with her brother and sister in-law. This provided the opportunity for me to also spend some much needed time catching up with my friend Meghan, who is newly engaged, and get to know her hubby to be. Also, I went to where I had not been in almost a year.... San Diego. I had made plans to meet up with Garyn for coffee before doing lunch with Bennett and his wife, Laura; along with David and Laura Rasmussen. It was wonderful to be surrounded by familiar friends, and this time it was so different than when I was there last.... I was visiting. But on the way driving down after dropping Kristi off in Capistrano Beach.... a sinking feeling in my gut.... and this weight had dropped on me. I had to keep telling myself... this is not my home anymore, and really it never was, and I just knew the enemy was getting to me. The moments of regret were resurfacing of ever setting foot in San Diego, and yet.... going was so foreign.

I got to San Diego and Garyn and I made plans to meet at Coffee Bean (the last Coffee Bean I worked at in Carmel Mountain), and it was weird.... it felt like I had never been there yet had familiarity (being I had been there for 4 months), and I walked in and it was just.... different. I felt this peace of "this was your life, and you have been healing and moving forward". So after meeting with Garyn I headed to where we were all meeting for lunch (Wesley House Alum lunch kinda), and it was the same route that I would take to go to my house from work while living in San Diego. And the feeling returned. I got through lunch and it was so different.... being in a place that was so distant yet familiar... kinda of like what I came out of. I know where I was emotionally, spiritually, and mentally, but it is so far from me now.... but I recognize it when it makes an appearance. It reminded me I am still healing, and probably will be for a long while. In a lot of ways I want to be who I was 3 1/2 years ago.... so on fire for the Lord, carefree, and moving at a fast pace conquering each of my goals. I am reminded everything happens in the Lord's time from moving on to healing, to forgiveness, and it all starts with us and our relationship with God being solid and moving on from there. I still suffer those moments, but they are becoming more and more few and far inbetween of not wanting to get up in the morning and just wanting to do nothing in bed. Not wanting to face what lies ahead.... but I remember that God wants me to press on towards the call of Jesus Christ.... with each breath in my life. And so everyday it should be my prayer that it would be my heart's desire to do so, and that I regain my strength and passion daily, and be stronger than yesterday. The road has been long and I am still traveling on it, but I have curved around for the better, with a ways to go.

October Update: "Where is Fall?"

Family and Dear Friends,

October has been one crazy month and it has gone by very quickly. First thing on my mind is: Where is Fall? Other than that though.... things are good. I am enjoying my job, and continue to feel blessed with having a job to begin with, and one where I work with great people, and God knew what He was doing. For those who aren't too sure where I am working and what I do.... I am working for a car dealership Cole Chrysler Dodge Mazda in San Luis Obispo. I am working in the service department doing a lot of Admin work and little odds and ends here and there. I am learning a lot and can now add Administrative and Clerical work to my resume :) I love working in a no-drama environment, and the days don't seem to drag too much. Can't really complain with getting car work done at almost nothing, just paying 50% of part cost. So, it has been a blessing, as I am doing what I can to extend the life of my car.

Everything else: Chaotically busy. Serving with the youth group at church has been wonderful and getting to really know them and their struggles and how God is using what I have gone through (some things due to my being hard-headed and self-inflicted), to really minister to them and deepen those relationships. We went to Boomers last Friday and had a wonderful time. Got ganged up on by a couple of the youthies and got a little wet in the motor boats (more than I planned). I am still doing childcare for our bible studies at church and being in choir has also been a lot of fun, and definitely a step out of my comfort zone. It is nice to have fellowship in the process with people I wouldn't normally, so that has been cool.

Every weekend in October.... I have been somewhere other than home. The first weekend I went to a baby shower for a dear friend down south, and then I was at a memorial service in Frazier Park which was also half of a high school reunion. The weekend after my good friend Brian Jost and I went up to San Francisco to visit my old roommate Ali, and had a blast. It was also his birthday so it was cool to go to Alcatrz and see the Blue Angles in S.F. for Fleet Week. Did a lot of walking, did a little shopping, lots of eating, some wine tasting.... all in all, a great weekend and seeing my other previous roommate Abbie in Salinas on the way home when we had dinner at Outback. Then this past week was the highly anticipated Rocktober weekend. There are 8 of us with birthdays in the month of October, and with alot of planning, and coordination went to Magic Mountain, Disneyland/Ca. Adv. and then to an ice hockey game of one of the Rocktober honorees. It was a great weekend! So, I did have a birthday earlier this month and turned 2-5. It was a toughy, and still is as I come to terms with "I am really an adult", I am in a new statistical age bracket.

What's ahead..... continue to remind myself how blessed I am to be working, I am contemplating taking some online and night classes to add to some of my education, raise my GPA, and have the ability to apply to Grad school if that is what I end up wanting to do. I have definitely thought about it for awhile in Wine and Viticulture or Business or even Ag Business. I do think an MBA would serve me well. I have also loosely sent out resumes to out of state firms and businesses within my field. No I am not unhappy with my job, but I still want to use my degree, and my heart has always had a pull to live in NYC, even for just a couple years. We shall see what God does with that desire. I also plan to continue to serve with church, as long as God gives me clearance. We have a youth retreat coming up in November, so be in prayer about that. I also have a Pampered Chef Show coming up since my roommate is a consultant, and it would be great to help her out. So it is on November 6th, and I am stoked on that. If you want to come let me know, or can't go but want to buy something my roommate can set up a way for you to buy online and have those purchases go towards my show. I am also excited as the holidays are not far off and for our church's Drive- Thru Nativity Scene and Christmas concert/program.... it is all definitely busy, but I am loving every minute of it all!

Prayer: To be protected from getting sick anymore.... it's happened way too much this year; and we have a few kids in our youth group who have shared where they are at in their faith and where they aren't so prayer for the ministry and for each teen in it. Thank you for all the prayers this past year from my health, to well being, to job situation.... :) I still blog here and there, so..... mini-updates will show up there at caitlynlawton.blogspot.com

Blessings and Joy,
Caitlyn

Sherwood: "QU" Third ALbum comes out TODAY!

Message from Joe from Sherwood:

Hey friends,

My band Sherwood's third album QU comes out today. I'm very proud of the music on it, and I think you will love it.

More good news: if you are so inclined, you can purchase QU for only $2.99 TODAY AND TOMORROW ONLY (that's Tuesday and Wednesday) by going here:

http://www.amazon.com/Qu/dp/B002R6Z7O4/ref=sr_shvl_album_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1255377303&sr=301-4

You can also listen to the whole thing at myspace.com/sherwood to make sure you like what you're gonna buy.

Thanks for reading and for being a part of my life.

Love,
Joe

P.S. If you're feeling extra generous, please re-post/status update/Tweet/whatever.

And from my friend Josh Jetter also playing with them on tour right now:

Yo Friends!

If any of you have wondered about the random city status updates, I’ve been touring and playing guitar with a band called Sherwood for the last few months. (My law job doesn't start until next Fall.)

Sherwood’s new album “QU” arrived in stores today, and is available for $2.99 on Amazon.com today and tomorrow only. I wrote one song on the record (“Worn”), and though I’m almost certainly biased, I think the album is quite good. The link for the two-day sale is here!

http://www.amazon.com/Qu/dp/B002R6Z7O4/ref=sr_shvl_album_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1255377303&sr=301-4

If you want to say hello at one of the shows, the tour dates are here:

http://myspace.com/sherwood

Check it out, and spread the word!

Josh

p.s. If you want more info about the sale, I included a note from the band below.

--

Without getting into too boring of a discussion about the music industry, it’s worth mentioning that first week sales are very important, and all of these sales, though discounted, count in full, and will help us to get better tours, song placements, and get more CDs in stores after the first week.

What’s crazy is that Amazon pays our label and us a full rate – THEY take the hit (in order to get people to the site, to then hopefully buy vacuum cleaners or books or whatever). So you are supporting us the same as if you have paid $10 on iTunes or in Best Buy, but it’s only costing you $3.

So please, if you have any interest, any curiosity about Sherwood, get the album for $3 on Tuesday or Wednesday. And if you possibly can, please tweet it, status update it, or even better, write a note like this and tag any friends who you think may be at all interested. We appreciate the help more than we can say.

Also, the whole album is streaming right now at http://myspace.com/sherwood so you can make sure you actually like it before buying. =)

Thank you so much!

Took Nor-Cal by storm!

What an exciting weekend and month this is truly turning out to be. This past weekend my wonderful friend Brian Jost and I went up to San Francisco to visit my dear friend and previous roommate, Ali, and had a wonderful time. It also happened to be Jost's bday so it was like the first time ever he had done something planned out, which is cool. We went to San Fran the busiest weekend of the year with the Blue Angels also being in town. We did the Alcatraz tour which was neat, and made me quite glad for the choices I have made to not get myself a pretty little box like that to live in for the rest of my days. We did quite the trek in going from that area at Pier 39 to Lombard in trying to find the street where you see the houses from Full Houses. Great weekend, with some good shopping. I demonstrated good control in going into American Eagle, even with their amazing sale going on right now. I got a couple cute tops for work/play/anytime and a nice pair of jeans for less than $50.00 and I had a gift card as well, so it was awesomeness. Sunday we went to an Art and Wine Faire in Downtown San Carlos and the wine was alright, and we bought some awesome fudge and then ended the weekend with a trip to Ikea (I heart Ikea) and stopped in Salinas for dinner and met up with Abbie for a bit to see her new place, and it was just awesome. Brian is so patient with me as a friend, and we didn't bicker like our normal interactions (which is usually mostly in fun, so it was a change of pace). Now, as I recover from one of the worst sicknesses I have had this year (double ear infection still wins), and cough up my lungs :) Work and prepare for ROCKTOBER weekend. Magic Mountain and Disneyland in one weekend. Talk about busy, busy! I will have my pics of San Fran up soon!

Please pray for this week as I continue to get better from what seems like the flu I had.

More Bday party pics!

So blessed for dear friends. More highlights from the night

Busy weekend.... some blessings and reminders.

I am so blessed! Friday night my roommates and friend Megan put together such a wonderful bday party for me (as I turn 25 tomorrow). I couldn't have asked for more than great fellowship, great food, fun games, and a bonfire pit with smores and banana boats. Megan made her famous (to me) Stuffed Green Peppers, and we had Fajitas (courtesy of Kristi), and the famous Bockhahn Artichoke dip with rice from Maddie and Nathan (and Justin of course), and an amazing pink Champagne funfetti cake made by wonderful Kim and Kristi. A few rounds of Poopy Head, and sitting by the fire. Thanks so much to Karen (Kristi's mom) for letting us invade the Homestead!

The rest of the weekend was busy with a baby shower for my dear friend Iskra on Saturday and a reunion with my lovely friend Laura who also came! Oh the old school Wesleyians were together again! Sunday was not so wonderful-- a memorial service for an old friend (been 4 years since we have spoken a word to each other), and her brother's father. It was like a mini-High School reunion with some people I have literally not seen since graduating. Wish the circumstances for meeting had been on a better note.

A long drive home, and now the week begins and I am anxiously excited for my and Brian Jost's roadtrip to the Bay Area in San Carlos to see Ali this coming weekend! Oh and it is the Joster's bday this weekend.

FlashForward

Caught the premiere of FlashForward last night... and LOVED it. I hope this is just the beginning of some good story, and not false hope. If you haven't seen it yet.... you can catch the Encore tonight or online at ABC website. I am an avid LOST fan, and while they have different story lines, they are very similar it appears in cinematography and intensity and becoming hooked. So Thursdays at 8/7 central. If you didn't catch it, try to. And if you did... what did you think?

Wednesday: See YOU @ The Poll

This Wednesday is "See You @ The Pole". 7am go find your local high school and pray with your community and make a stand on the campus and for the community. The God is our foundation. This is a nationwide event, even at Christian schools (that already pray at least once a day). I know this time is early, but coming together with the same common purpose to worship and pray and being an example to those students that will also be there. I live on the Central Coast, and I have a few options.... due to the fact many of the students in the youth group I serve in at my church attend Arroyo Grande High School, Nipomo High School, and Coastal Christian.... I will be attending Arroyo Grande High School. I do know our youth pastor, Aaron Jones, will be in attendance at AGHS as well. If you live in San Luis Obispo, go ahead and join those at Mission College Preparatory School or San Luis Obispo High School... or even the primary schools in the area. All college campuses are also going to be doing this, and there is more freedom for staff and faculty to participate than with secondary school. 7am! Go to Starbucks before hand to get your energy going, and I can bet this alone will get your day going.

Check out the website too: http://www.syatp.com/home/

While wine tasting with Kevin today and hitting 3 vineyards, and one of them was one that Kevin had not been to before... and so we went to Tobin James before that though and met Tobin himself. He is a rad and fun guy and he gave us two of his awesome premiere glasses and signed them for us. I was stoked.

If you haven't been doing much tasting in Paso, you need to. And take a trip over to Tobin James.

Church Break Perhaps?

Contemplating taking a church break. Not a break from God... that could never happen.... but just being in a fellowship. I don't like the drama, politics, and I don't like the hypocrisy. I want a body of believers who are honest, genuine, and love others as Christ loves them. Is that alot to ask? The church (as a whole today) is not the church Christ desired.... and yet here we are. How do we get back to the heart of why we fellowship and worship together? Prayer? Commitment? The enemy is really getting the advantage in tearing churches apart and it is so disheartening.

You see life, is a curious thing....

Life is interesting. The things that consume us and the things that we blow off. What we find important may not be important to the person next to us. People are interesting as well. Our perspective may not be someone elses', and yet sometimes neither of those individuals are wrong. Christianity is interesting when it comes to relationships. Not all Christians can be instantaneous friends. Some of them will still not care for the other or for some of the things that they believe. God is interesting on how he has created all these things, all with His purpose, and a full purpose not fully revealed except that it is all in the end going to be for his glory.

As We Remember and Never Forget

September 11! Seems like yesterday sometimes when we see the video footage. I am reminded how lucky I am to live in a country that (for the most part) protects my freedoms. I am not too worried to walk outside of my home for the fear of my life. I know what happened reminds us of how proud I am to be American. We have continued the fight against Terrorism and the disarming of weapons of mass destruction. I know God forsees this all, and I know in this we see God's love in how this event brought our country together. Some people came to salvation because of the events of 9/11. I realize that there have been changes following and I don't mind the increase in security when I travel or in major cities.... in fact I value those who make those decisions to do so as they are protecting the people of the nation.

I pray for the families who were affected by those they lost in 9/11. I pray for comfort as they still grieve from such an event. I thank the Lord for His hand on our nation and I ask that He would continue to give discernment and wisdom to our leaders and protection to those who work day in and day out to protect us! Thank you for protecting me!

Before It Gets Too Busy...

As we swing into Fall I am going to be one traveling and busy bee. I am liking my job and the flexibility it has and it is still full time and ideal with the life I want-- as in being able to see people on nights and weekends. I have a road trip to LA this weekend (one dayer), then a day at a Paso Winery next weekend, and then I have a trip to Thousand Oaks for a baby shower and time in Ventura the first weekend in October, followed with the next weekend to San Carlos/Salinas/San Fran to see Ali and Abbie, and then Rocktober weekend at the end of the month, and then a Pampered Chef Party I am hosting the first weekend in November. Life is definitely busy, but it is good for sure!

Oh and... I found out I get medical insurance starting December 1st!!!! Woot!

The Job Story

First and foremost thank you to each and everyone of you for praying and being of such great encouragement to me these past several months as the trial of being unemployment was anything but a cinch. I believe so much about the power of prayer and see it so much through this. I was getting very discouraged and wondering what God was doing... is He closing the doors to my living here on the Central Coast? Or in California?

As you all know I was looking for just about anything besides digging graves at a pet cemetery (well and people for that matter). I was on Cal Poly Mustang Jobs Wednesday morning and saw an ad for File Clerk/Shuttle Driver (and the pay was decent-- as I calculated my expenses), so I said "sure, why not?'. Within an hour got a phone call from Cole Doge Chrysler Mazda and he asked me to come in that afternoon. I did after meeting with AmeriCorp (which was not something I had peace about walking away from). So, I meet this guy who is laid back and really nice, and he says he will check my references and get back to me the next day. I have heard this before and was like... "okay, thanks". So Wednesday night my friend Joanna, who was the Assistant Manager at Talbots said she was called for a reference. I then got the call yesterday morning from Jacob again, the manager from Cole, and asked me to come back in. I went in this morning and met other managers, and they also decided they would give me more responsibilities given I have a B.S. and am working 40 hours a week. So it is more of an Administrative Assistant position. SO, then I took my drug test, got my DMV print out-- then proceeded to file I-9 paperwork. :) He detailed my hours and my start date and said in 3 months if all is well then I would get a raise.

So, thank you for praying and encouraging me. I was getting pretty discouraged, but God always comes through at the last minute it seems. I start on Tuesday at 8:30 in the morning til 5:30. Then I will be M-F 8:30-5:30 with weekends off :)

So that is the story! Now the next two months of catching up from NOT working is the next task and prepare to celebrate turning 25 in October. So definitely Praise the Lord for Prayer Warriors, for friends and family (church family included), and for His provision!

Also, once I get caught up... I owe some friends a visit including Amber, Ali, Abbie, Roon... and Tania... and others and it will happen. One weekend at a time.

Will I Ever Kick This Thing?

So yesterday I decided I should get a follow up visit after being there a month prior for the double ear infection and throat infection.... well....

it is all coming back or just won't die. So it is back to being on the antibiotics, and rebuilding the immune system I apparently don't have. Increasing my Vitamin C and Omega 3 intake and just try to get better and rebuild at the same time-- sounds tiring doesn't it?

So prayer for that this week would be awesome! I think I could make a career in being sick, however I feel like I am paying out instead of being paid for it.

Summer Comes to the End.... and on a quiet note.

After two months I am still job searching and I feel so discouraged. I know that it is not my fault that the unemployment rate in California is at a record high of 11.9% and climbing and the nation is at 9% and recent reports state it will only continue to climb. While I am petrified of continuing to make ends meet... .God has gotten me through today and I assume I will make it tomorrow.

My family was in town this weekend and with that comes mixed feelings. Love them in small doses, but I definitely have my limit of how much I can handle, and I definitely handle being around them better separately than as a whole. With my parents situation, that is always needing prayer.. it scares me a bit. I see things in me that remind me of my mom.... and things that I believe hinder her from wanting to be happy or making things work... like marriage, and it scares me to wonder if I will be the same way... and knowing that am okay with not being married as I deal with those things like being a reactor. They definitely need prayer as my mom continues saying they will be divorcing and all this other stuff. I saw a lot this weekend, and it really just was disheartening.

I do have some ideas with working in a position under AmeriCorps, so I am really praying God does something with that... as there is a position in Santa Maria that I feel would be a good fit for me. It would be doing some program coordinating for a non-profit, and there is a stipend and 4,700 at the end of the term paid back to my principle on my student loans, and health insurance, and only 15-20 from my house. So prayerfully God works through that, or works through something soon.

Nothing else really going on. I have been enjoying more "me" time lately than usual, so not too sure why. As I stare 25 down in a little under a month and a half, I have been reflecting on a lot and just thinking how I never thought I would be where I am at 25. But here I am... now what to do with it.

Prayer Requests: My parents for restoration and healing and forgiveness. My job and financial situation and for God's peace and having the faith He will continue to provide. Also, I feel like my ear infections are coming back, so prayer for that to not be the case.

Remembering

I am constantly being reminded that "if at all possible... we are to live at peace with all men". Reconcile ourselves as brothers and sisters in Christ. We must be willing to be humble. We must be willing to forgive. In that we strengthen our love with Christ and towards the body! Nothing anyone does is worth cutting them off or devaluing them. We are to look at others, love others, and forgive others as Christ as loved and forgiven us. See people how God sees them.

Is there someone in your life that you need to make peace with? Bitterness is a bad thing in your heart to have.

Being genuine..... and loving..... can't go wrong there.

What's my love language.... well according to Facebook :)

Words of Affirmation

Lifebook_words_profile

Mark Twain once said “I can live for two months on a good compliment.” Verbal appreciation speaks powerfully to persons whose primary Love Language is “Words of Affirmation.” Simple statements, such as, “You look great in that suit,” or “You must be the best baker in the world! I love your oatmeal cookies,” are sometimes all a person needs to hear to feel loved. Aside from verbal compliments, another way to communicate through “Words of Affirmation” is to offer encouragement. Here are some examples: reinforcing a difficult decision; calling attention to progress made on a current project; acknowledging a person’s unique perspective on an important topic. If a loved one listens for “Words of Affirmation,” offering encouragement will help him or her to overcome insecurities and develop greater confidence.

Joyous reminder

Church today was very different than other services we have had. First of all, Mike Gunderson (the Lead Pastor at my church) was wearing a suit and tie.... but because each service was half sermon and half wedding ceremony. 1st service Rick DeJong and Carrie Cole (now also DeJong) were married in front of the whole congregation... .1st service was packed. 2nd service not packed at all with the same format except new members, Robert and Anita Paloma, to our congregation who are also new in their relationship with the Lord, renewed their vows. Definitely a joyous morning reminding me of some of the cool things that God orchestrates.

Double Whammy!

Over this past weekend my ear was starting to hurt... and it had a small bump on it, and I figured it was a pimple (oil can build anywhere right?). Then it started hurting a little more. I was coming back from Amy' s in A-town on Tuesday and it was throbbing a little bit so I put some ice on it.... and it actually made it hurt worse. Wednesday it still hurt and I had a headache. Okay..... hmmmm.... granted I haven't had whatever this is before. So, Wednesday night I go with Kim to her Party-Lite show being held at the church. So, I talk to one of my "other mom's" about it. So she looks at it and says I should get it looked at... well this started the church mom parade of Juanita (our Pastor's wife) and Cheryl also looking at it... then Kathleen looks at it... and I have a respecting fear of her enough to do what she says ;) I don't think she knows that. They all tell me the purple color oin the cartilage coming from the canal is not looking so good and it is hot (my ear). So, Thursday I break down and go to Urgent Care in AG. And well here is the conversation with the doctor:

Doctor: So, problems with the ear huh? Which ear?
Me: My right ear
Doctor: Okay, I will start by looking at your left ear and see what's all going on

(doctor proceeds to get the medical instrument to look inside my ear)

Doctor: So, wait... your right ear is the one bothering you?
Me: Yes....
Doctor: Hmm.. well looks like you have a small infection in your left ear

(Here I am thinking.... "are you serious????")

so next.... (Doctor looks in right ear....)

Doctor: Definitely infected in your right ear. Does it hurt? It definitely does feel warm from your ear down to your neck

(Duh..... I wouldn't be here if this was not the case)

Me: Yeah it hurts
Doctor: How long has this been going on?
Me: A few days or so
Doctor: You should have come in here sooner

(Were I to have insurance those chances are good I would have)

Anyway.... he then looks at my throat...

Doctor: Let me take a look at your throat... say "ah"
Me: Ahhhhhhhhhh
Doctor: Hmm... looks like you have an infection in your throat too. You are faling apart (he says with a smile)

He asked how old I was (all information he has in my chart), I tell him I am almost 25 and I have never had ear infections before.... let alone 2 at the same time. He asked if I have asthma, which I said yes. We talked about my heart condition and my exercise habits, and also talked about my history with Bronchitis and Pnemonia. Those things I have more than enough of experience with.

He put me on antibiotics (heavy duty stuff), and the side effects.... not pleasant. Nausea, cramping, gassy, dizziness, drowsiness, and my ears still feel like pins and needles are beating in them, and my throat does hurt and feel super dry. Definitely puts a damper on the job hunt or rather... a delay. Funny they always have my birth year wrong at the pharmacy. They have aged me by 3 years... :)

So prayer for a quick recovery and God's provision with the job situation. So there is my story about one small ear ache I thought to be a pimple.... :) Thanks Dotti, Juanita, Cheryl, and Kathleen for encouraging me to go to the Doctor... and Wilda. And thanks to my wonderful and awesome roommate who also told me to go.

7 years.... and I am still here

The other day was the 7 year mark of when I first moved to San Luis Obispo. Time has gone by quickly. I look back one year ago when I then moved to San Diego, against everyone's advice, and 4 months later my heart had had enough and moved back home. While it has come with trials and life altering events.... I don't think I would change a thing.... well for the most part. Of course, had I not left in the first place I would probably still be working at Coffee Bean in Pismo, and that's probably the only high light. I don't know how long I would have stuck it out at a spiritually dead church that I came to serve at for a year and that was the only commitment I had made, and I had already had plans to go back to Oak Park where things were a lot healthier. I probably should have done it sooner, but hey..... lesson learned. Some great friendships have emerged, some have even strengthened more, and some have fizzled.

This past Sunday was the 2nd week in our series "Summer of Love". This week it was Love Bears All Things. It dealt with reconciling and loving those who are not easy to love. We all have people like that-- those not easy to love. And we have pride. I know I do. I will always apologize if I know I messed up, but you know... when I am not sorry.... I am getting more and more defensive of my stance. Will it matter in a week? Or in a month? Why waste the energy when there is so much more in life to live for? I will always remember the conversation I had with Mike Gunderson a few weeks back when I was working on things at church (Mike Gunderson is our lead pastor). He said if at all possible to live at peace with all men. But there will be times, when there is no possibility... whether the other person choses to not forgive, or they refuse reconciliation.... but on our end we are to do what we can and love as Christ does. I think this has become a matter of perspective and we forget that GOD IS LOVE. We forget that love is patient and kind. We forget that it does not keep record of wrongs. We forget that it does not take offense. We say we love and forgive... but when that next fight ensues.... the whole history comes back up. So much for forgiveness. I am definitely very guilt of this. So, yesterday was a good reminder of how to love, how to forgive, and how to reconcile. Reconciliation won't always equal restoration, but the relationship of being brothers and sisters in Christ is restored.

Prayer for the week: the job interview I had last week went very well, so prayer for its outcome. It is in the same town I live in and a great opportunity.
Also, prayer for finances. Prayer for my family through some difficult cirsumstances. For "LOVE TO BEAR ALL THINGS" to really become alive this week for them.

Is this a door opening or is the opportunity just knocking?!

I was speaking with a family friend and catching up with her about my job situation post-Poly and where I am with student loan repayment and what happens in a year if I am still where I am now.... maybe that is too much time. I have something to consider.... life on the East Coast with family and some friends. I did talk to an Event Management firm in NYC in the Financial District and if and when I make it out there.... let them know and see if they can take me on. So, maybe only time will tell.

So does this mean go or just a wait and see?!

When it rains.... it hails?

The middle of July brings to peak the summer and then the weeks ahead draw it to a close and Fall will be upon us before we know it. I am excited for it despite current circumstances of not working. I have great time with friends from the various Party Lite parties at our house to attending Pampered Chef parties to going to the church's men's softball game on Tuesday nights (yeah, we aren't doing so well..... and 21-50 year old men all become babies I tell you!). Great time of fellowship nonetheless. And spur of the moment trips in Ventura and staying at Roon's (Natalie). The beach being on my constant agenda and continuing to job hunt and interview are also the plans and fixing Champ.... in all this I find myself not taking my own advice, even though I should and believe it with everything I am.... I still can't come to the ability to take it.

Life happens for a reason and everything in it. I know God is in control of it all, and try to find peace in that. Maybe it is my constant battle of wanting real control of my life and hating the unknown. I always remember the verse about not worrying about tomorrow.... and you know.... it's hard. When the responsibilities I have are affected by not working and I can't be a very fun friend right now, I am blessed for the understanding of friends.... some in the same position as the economy has hit everyone pretty hard. I did interview for a great job yesterday in Arroyo Grande, and in prayer hope it will work out. I interviewed for Conway Family Wines and they are a newer company which is still in the process of growth and development and are currently building a winery not far from Camp Maddux out by Lopez Lake (not too far a drive), and it is all detail oriented and people oriented work with so much room for growth as they grow as well. They are now casing their first vintage and it looks very promising. So, I pray for this position as I felt the interview went very well, but I have had those before, and nothing came of them. Trying to trust and actually trusting I know are two different things.

I think I am in the I want to trust and just be joyful, but then my personality kicks in with the wanting to be in control and have it all planned and worked out.... and I know God does not always work that way. Definitely not in tune with my timing that's for sure. I think about how when it rains it pours..... and some people just don't understand. Example: Champ is dying.... if you didn't know Champ is the name of my car. It suits him considering the trauma I have put that car through (mostly with accidents here and there), and he is a 15 year old car that I bought 5 1/2 years ago and was 19, not understand what "salvage" title meant. I knew quickly.... it meant it was not worth very much. However, it served it's purpose and the pride of buying it myself. I babied that thing from $40.00 car washes once a month. Then you get the first ding and you are like "WHAT THE CRAP???" and then your care goes down.... Champ has seen better days, but still he keeps going. But here we are now and realizing all the cheaper stuff has been done.... what's left?? The big stuff. At this point people say "Caitlyn, just buy a new car". Okay, with my non existant salary and not so steller credit.... great idea.... not. Dave Ramsey who has designed the Financial Peace courses and our church has them for us 2 times a year about.... well a new car is not a good investment but a car maybe 2 or 3 years old..... gold mine. The value is what it is and driving it away does not make it lose the 2,000-4,000 a car loses when it is brand new and you drive it off the lot. Anyway.... people don't understand it is alot easier to come up with even $1,000 to fix something than $3,000 for a down and then payments..... and even then.... $1,000 in these times is not exactly easy either. If I am stressing over a small sum, what would a bigger one do? Cause an anurism most likely.

So, with not working is the rain.... and Champ dying slowly is the pouring part. Always gotta wonder when God will stop the rain huh? I definitely do, or at least let the it just be rain and not big hail balls dropping at high speeds ;)

Wow, that was a cool analogy and I didn't even try.

Anyway: Prayer requests:

JOB! the interview yesterday and for it to end well, and for God to provide for that-- and soon.
Car: we may have found and fixed the problem, but may not have. For it to be a cheaper problem than what we are thinking.
Finances: especially with being out of work. I did apply for Unemployment, but so are 12% of California and well..... California is not doing well, and government officials are slow as it is :)

Around the World in 4 Days

July is starting off with lots of driving. Friday night I drove to Frazier Park and back to get my mom and sister so that is 300 miles round trip, then Sunday Kim and I drove up to Napa (Kim drove) and that was 300 each way so a total of 600 miles... and then yesterday I drove to Ventura with my mom and sister to meet up with my dad and that was 110 miles and then I drove back from Ventura after staying at Nat's last night and drove another 110 this morning. That is a total of 1120 miles in 4 days. I am tired.

With all that was awesome exciting times of 4th of July and in that celebrating with my mom and sister, roommate Kim, neighborish Toby, and friends and church family at church. Every year Oak Park has a BBQ and fireworks show and it was just such a positive time, and was so much fun. LOUD fireworks which scared every child under the age of 3, and the men of the church.... loved every moment of lighting things off. Again, thanks to Armando, Corey, and Randy for everything in that and setting up! Clean up after 45 minutes of contant TNT fireworks is no easy task!

The next morning was met by Kim and myself bright and early as we headed to Napa! My first time up there, and we went to get Kristi to bring her home for a few days before she returns for the remainder of her summer to care for her grandmother. So it was so much fun driving up and then getting there, and having luncgh with her Uncle Roger and Grandma Bockhahn. Then we went to Beringer Winery in Napa (Well really St. Helena, California) Great wine, but also such a beautiful landscape, buildings, and property the winery sits on. Absolutely stunning. My facebook will have them up!! It was seriously a wonderful roommate day and so fun! My first time in Napa and I got to wine taste (the white wines anyways).

Then Monday I spent with my mom and sister before driving down to Ventura to meet up with my dad who has just returned from Denver, Colorado where he was attending a family reunion. So, we met up there to trade off the fam, and then spur of the moment visiting Natalie (Roon), which then turned into my spending the night and playing Sequence with her and the family she lives with (who are all awesome people), and watching Scrubs Mini-Marathon, and playing this new game I learned called Ninja! Talk about Physical Exersion on that one. So fun, then this morning had breakfast and then a whirlwind and quick tour of Ventura (well really Roon showing me the house she grew up in and then also her church!), and now I am back home in AG, and it was so tiring, but so worth all of it.

Also had Disneyland from last week, so there has not been any real calming time as of yet. Maybe next week. I was let go from my job last week and it has been such the ordeal and my mom is telling me it is a huge blessing to be out of there. We shall see. God only knows right?! I had an interview last week at Monarch Club at Trilogy (Shea Homes) in Nipomo and I have one doing Marketing and Sales in Nipomo as well. I also need to follow up on a hotel position in Santa Maria. So, I am blessed with my parents who have really stepped up to help me out. I am blessed and lucky. God is providing through them. It is great having Kristi back home for a few days, and great time with family, and seeing Roon, and just letting life happen!

So much going on and it is only July 7th. Weird though.... yesterday I was driving down to Ventura with my mom when it dawned on me that a year ago yesterday I moved to San Diego. Talk about a crazy year since. Moved there, moved back, and here I am now. Talk about crazy! I know I am exactly where I am supposed to be living with the most wonderful people I know, and surrounded by huge blessings. I couldn't ask for more right?

It happens in 3's

It definitely does... as weird as the myth is. This week the Entertainment Industry World has lost 3 big people in the industry: Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcet, and Michael Jackson (with the third being a complete shock to the world).

Each of these losts comes with one thought "did they know Jesus as their personal Savior?". It is a safe and yet very disheartening assumption to believe that Michael Jackson did not know Jesus, and his eternity is not very pleasant. This man influenced MANY of our current entertainers including Usher, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears.... just to name a few. With all the fame and fortune someone could ask for.... this man did not have what only Jesus gives... joy. This man had what the world could offer and despite the allegations and "eccentric" (as the media refers to it) life he lived with his questionable moves in life... he was idolized and supported by millions when my neighboring county and city hosted his trial for child molestation charges. I remember media people and jurors coming into the Starbucks I worked at during the proceedings, and even not violating the confidentiality of the case still had stories about this man... odd ones. This man had no joy. And it has always been evident through his public interviews and statements and the drastic changes he made to himself, which were all testaments of how he saw himself-- not good enough. He was not confident in how he looked, and yes while he suffered from two very troubling diseases, which were lupus and vitilgo (a skin pigmentation disorder), took drastic measures to completely change himself from forehead lifts, to nose jobs, to adding a clef to his chin. His dramatic changes caused media attention... and never seemed to be positive light... while his personal life became the media frenzy of attack and criticism.... his professional career was a different story. He broke the barriers and understandably the music industry and entertainment industry is mourning the loss of an influential player to the game of success and influence. To this I completely agree. Deeper though.....

No matter how hard he tried..... it was not enough and this man obviously lived in complete depression and internal agony. A man who looks like a strong gust of wind could blow him over due to his lack of weight (not a laughing matter).... hid from the media following the trial in 2005. Neverland Ranch is a mere 45 miles from my house and is an icon in the Santa Ynez Valley.... he is an example that you can have everything the world has to offer: money, power, fame, houses, cars, attention.... and still that won't buy joy, happiness, health, self-worth, confidence.

Farah Fawcet passes from her battle with cancer.... from someone who has no idea what that is like-- I can't imagine knowing it is coming.... and you wonder... did she think about much where life was after death? Is that it? We live and then we die without any purpose beyond that. Anything else beyond that?

Ed McMahon lived a long life and helped to bring many people into the spot light from Star Search and many people have this man to think for their start. His encouragement to them as they performed was amazing... and he just looked like the sweetest man. But having never met the man (nor the others), I don't really know. I can only assume.

A reminder that even in my grim of circumstances life may bring that I don't let it get me down. And God gives and takes away.... but NO ONE can take my joy. I know at any moment God can be like "Alright Caitlyn... you're done on earth.... time to come home" its a non-negotiable. I won't know the hour, way, or time.... but He does. When He is ready for me. And it is kinda weird to think about. I know where I am going... and that makes it not depressing, but shows to not fear death.... because I have eternal life in Jesus Christ. Finding my identity in that instead of worldly titles, looks, fame, fortune.... none of it is eternal. I was not born with it and I will leave this world without it. Prayerfully, God is being a comfort to the families of each of these passed away and loved ones to many. Revealing Himself as those who grieve the loss of their loved ones.... God can make the most of a tragedy by His comfort, grace, and love.

What happened to hand-writing a letter?

I was responding to an email tonight and I realized.... I email the way I talk... ALOT! Ha Ha. It is weird the culture we are in that communication has come down to Instant Messaging, Texting, Facebook, Twitter....

I realized how sucked in I am even with having my Twitter updates and Facebook updates sent to my cell and I can respond back to things from there. I text probably 50x more than I talk on the phone, and yet was flabbergasted to see my brother's texting usage when I am just as bad.... I am part of this society where real letter writing, calling on the phone, and whatnot are a thing of the past-- an ancient past time.... maybe like the style of the '80s it will make a comeback.... like with sweatbands, leggings (yes I have gotten into this one), and crimped hair.... and have you seen the plastic jellies coming back out.... oh wow....okay off topic... probably because I was done with the other topic.

That was all

Life's Little Lessons

I am learning so much about alot of things. I know what a vague statement right?! Well lesson 1 for the week: Do not mix 1 benadryl with a pint of guiness and then a grande cinnamon dulce white mocha. Quite the little buzz. So that is a lesson right there.

Moving on.... I was talking with my awesome Pastor (and no he is not paying me to say that, I don't think he knows I have this blog... anyway) and well he and I were talking about relationships and what to do when a relationship has wounds, or rather a sharp turn in the road... resulting in conflict, hurt feelings, pain, anger. And the bottom line.... to live peacefully with all men. I am not perfect, but I reflect on the past few months with some relationships in my life which have gone south. Both of them are with people who were kinda close to me.... and you know.... I know that I can say with full assurance I have done what I need to do to move forward. I have sought forgiveness.... and I can't be held responsible nor continue to feel guilty if the other party choses not to do so. I have asked questions and sought to truly reconcile (and yes, we all know I am direct-- I am working on it.... slowly, but nonetheless). Today I realize.... there is nothing I can do to make either person forgive me. I know I can face Jesus and say.... I hold no anger, grudge, or bitterness. I also reflect on something my dear friend Genessa said: If someone can make it a point to avoid, make life alterations, talk about it, be angry, hurt.... claim victim in that... then they still do care-- and there is no way the person can be indifferent. I can't make K or A forgive me. That is between them and God at this point. I have sought forgiveness and I can't keep selling myself in order to beg for it. I have gone to God and I know He has forgiven me, I have forgiven myself, and I have asked for it. I am someone who needs to be in control (duh, ya think?!) and I can't control other people and how they feel. I am in control though of how much I let people hurt me, and I will not let people turn the tables to not accept their end/responsibility in things going south. It takes two for communication to suffer. I have been open, honest, and available. I have asked for forgiveness and it has not been given... it is their heart and not mine. I answer to God for MY actions not the actions of others. Mike was telling me today while I was at the church-- well rather reminding me-- that if at all possible we are to live at peace with all men. I have done all I can on my end. I don't have guilt. I don't have bitterness and anger. I am over it. Any other issues are no longer mine but K and A. Individual and separate, but similar. I am available when they are ready to forgive and reconcile. I have nothing bad to say about either woman, and would be a hypocrite to do so. I have my opinions yes.... but it has also changed. I care about them as people and am open to having them in my life... when they have come to a point of forgiveness, reconciliation, and are also ready to take responsibility for their roles as well. Like Mike says in church a lot "Christianity is simple, but it is not easy". And this is very true. The Bible outlines it.... we live in obedience, but it is not an easy task. Our flesh will still battle the spirit to come out with its claws out... but God conquers ALL!

Another lesson: Don't use email, texting, or IM to solve a problem or conflict. Tones get misconstrued, meanings get misread. And respect a person enough to take some real time to call or spend some time with the person. If you care enough to be angry, bitter, or upset... then that energy should be used to work it out. (Silence is not always golden).

Another lesson: Listen to your roommates when they tell you not to mix things ;)

Prayer: Job situation, Kristi's summer in Napa as she cares for her Grandma, my friend (Kristi's cousin) Matt as he prepares in raising money and whatnot for a missions trip with his church to Africa. For Megan who is currently training in the mission field, my parents, and my health with this allergy ordeal!

That's all! I promise to be more interesting and insightful.... at some point.... :)

San Luis Obispo is in the Spotlight.. and deservingly so!

U.S. News just released a report last week I believe naming San Luis Obispo area as one of the top 10 places in the country to live. Number 8 on the list to be exact. The only place in California to be mentioned for that matter. It is a great place for sure, and I am very blessed to live here... even with all the proposed developement to come in the next year or two.

Kohl's is coming in the Fall to replace the vacancy of where Mervyn's was, TJ Maxx and JC Penny are the proposed businesses to enter into the buildings left empty by the closures of Circuit City and Linens 'N Things. Also, One Way Boardshop has left the Irish Hills Plaza and is now residing in Madonna Plaza where Esteem was, as Esteem is just focusing on their store in Pismo Beach. Target is slotted to start developement on Los Osos Valley Road at the end of this year across from Irish Hills Plaza and will be part of the new plaza, Irish Hills West. Big things are happening, and yet the town will never lose it's feel. Gottchalks is leaving a big building with its closure next month, and Forever 21 has bought it and will be opening at the end of the summer or the beginning of fall. Apparently, the city's idea is to take away all the traffic that has been downtown and spread it out more through the city of SLO. Albertson's on Madonna and L.O.V.R (Los Osos Valley Rd.) closed back in early Spring and Spencer's opened in the same spot a month later. Big changes, but still the same town I have grown to love!!!

Fast Going Forward

Summer is really here! So what am I gonna do? I am going to Disneyland!! Well that's just part of it. So recap: My brother graduated from high school at the beginning of June, and it is just crazy to think.... that was me 7 years ago, and 1 year ago I graduated from Poly. My goals and dreams have changed-- or rather have matured-- and some old dreams have been revisited for consideration of making them happen. Crazy!

The season of some people in my life has ended, some new seasons have begun and that's pretty awesome. Through working and moving back home this last Winter.... well.... I have met some awesome people, and gotten to know others. I think the cool part is becoming friends with others in the church outside of like the 10 of us, and that has been a blessing. I also get to "borrow" babies and get my baby fix... thanks to the wonderful world of childcare and babysitting. In that, it has been a blessing to help them and do something for them that I also enjoy.

My thoughts on life right now: Do you ever walk into a room of people who you are not around as much as you used to be and feel like you can't come to them in the same way as you did before? Not in a good or bad way.... but the connection is different or like-- it is something nostalgic even. I feel it when I go into the Wesley House sometimes and when hanging out with Kevin and Richie and David-- of things that "were". It is interesting when how you view it is different, not necessarily a bad thing-- but different. Like my house. A year ago it was a place I was at all the time, but didn't have the same familiarity as my it does now being my house. Maybe it is the gloves come on or off and there is some loss of reservation. I guess it is hard to explain....

With this summer comes some excitement: Disneyland next weekend, A speedy trip to Napa, possibly serving at Camp Challenge... and one of the biggest excitements is seeing friends :) Suzanne is coming from Colorado and I am super excited, planning to go up and see Abbie, and have plans to hopefully have a Natalie reunion with both Momma Nat and Baby Nat. And also.... good times with roommates doing random things :) May and June are previewing this summer being full of Partylite Parties and Pampered Chef. My roommates are both consultants for each of the businesses and are recruiting even more. They are making an empire of the biz! And well... it's free food at a party, and it is also getting expensive trying to support them by buying plates or bowls or tea light candles. Maybe I should just host my own party so I can get the bowl I want ;). I will continue to be involved with Children's Ministry this summer-- and as I told Kristi take on responsibilites and not even know it (I am not a fan of pressuring titles).

Things to pray about: My brother... he needs direction and some kick in the butt in the motivation department. Prayer for my job situation and also continuing to pray for my health.... things are good as long as I avoid things that have given me a reaction-- oh and Benadryl is wonderful by the way! Instantaneous healing would be awesome, but I would take good management in a heart beat. Prayer for my roommate who is up in Napa for the summer caring for her Grandmother. Prayer for my friend Megan who is doing missionary training in Florida with the goal being for her to end up in Kenya (Lord willing). Prayer for my family just for God to be there and present.

I am good. Really. Stressed about usual financial stuff-- such is life but do look forward to taking Financial Peace in the Fall and learning how to be a steward with my money and also to stop stressing, because that would be nice. The past few weeks have been so busy with parties, church, babysitting, working, job hunting and being sociable. I love being busy, and can't wait for more of it. You tend to get in less trouble when you are too busy to twiddle your thumbs :)

Thought of the day!

A real friend does not give a friend an Amish Friendship Bread Starter!

Mishaps in bread!

So two Sundays ago the wonderful Corey Lindsay gave me a gift: Amish Friendship Bread starter kit... which of course I pawned off on Ryan because really.... that is way too much commitment for food for me... and in general.

Here I am at day 10.... I did the final mixing and baking... and 40 minutes into an hour bake time Ryan asks "You put in those eggs I set in by the bowl right?" Uh..... no. So, this is another testament that baby steps to make me less domestically challenged are indeed necessary. Tonight is a great example.... but hopefully it will taste okay. We did put Applesauce and Pudding into the batter as instructed.... maybe it won't hurt it. Will find out in 10 minutes I suppose.

A Reminder

Going out to The Cliffs last night with my roommates and close friends made me realize.... or rather remind me.... how perfect this place is. If I think this place is perfect... imagine how much better Heaven is :)

Black Jesus and Opportunities Knocking

Got pulled over in the black Jesus parking lot!

Wow, that will get anyone's attention. Anyway... story time.... Tuesday afternoon I was on my way to a job interview in SLO.... and while I did leave a little early from my house... it was not enough time. From Los Osos Valley Rd. to California Blvd. they have destroyed the freeway pretty much-- apparently making it worse in the process of making it better (or at least that is what they tell ya). I have to be at this interview at 1:00pm. Anyway... I proceed and exit on California and head towards Foothill... (for those of you who know SLO you know exactly where I am...) and to the right at Campus Bottle is a SLOPD on motorcycle stakin' out the street.... so I slow down... and a few seconds after passing him he gets behind me... hmmmm.... I kinda wondered if that would happen. So knowing he is behind me and he is not flashing his lights at me I get in the right hand left turn lane (there are two left turn lanes to go to Foothill from California)... and this green Dodge Caravan turns but goes into the right lane more than cutting me off. The moment this happens... the cop flashes his lights at me.... really... I wait... because there is no where safe to turn until the corner of Santa Rosa/Hwy 1 and Foothill where the Mt. Zion Luthern Church is.... where black Jesus sits in the stained glass window. Now at this point I realize God has a sense of humor... I got pulled over into a church parking lot!!!!!! So he gets out, and my sunglasses are still on and ironically enough worship music is playing but not loud. The first thing he says after you know the "hey how's it going?" was about how well I handled being cut off by the mom on the go van. Gee thanks.... then we talked about my going 49 miles an hour in a 35. (I know many of you are buldging their eyes.... aren't you Miss Katie Brooks?!?!) Then I told him yeah and he asked where I was going and I told him a job interview so he asked me about that (Hmmm..... plesantries while I know you are going to give me a fatty ticket for this one). Then he asks for the big 3's-- license, insurance, and registration.... and as I am frantically searching my safe spot for my registration he takes notice to the absence of my front license plate. So I inform him in the middle of hidden underneath sunglasses tears that my plates were stolen last year and I only had the bolts to put one back... to the back of the car. So, he leave with 2 out of 3-- my license and insurance. Comes back and is like "Look, I am just gonna write you a fix it ticket for your plates. Slow down and be careful". And he let me know that any officer in any presinct in the county can sign off on it. HA! I knows people.... and anyways.... that was it. Granted, I was late for my interview... ironically was pulled over into a church parking lot, and was definitely called out on my speed racing.... and he was totally awesome. (This is the run down of the 10 minute incident).

Today I had 3 interviews. All went okay. The one with El Dorado Broadcasters would be freakin' awesome. But today on SLOjobs I saw a job I so want as a Communications Associate for Lifewater International. So please be praying about that as that would be absolutely amazing. Since I started pursuing my degree I wanted to always apply it and my passion to work for people and serving others for ministry... and it would be amazing to do that with a missions based organization who desires to bring basic resources... such as water to other countries who lack the resources to have the same. It would be amazing to work for them and being in the area. Prayerfully God will be working in that... and again... I know this is something Katie would be seeking as well. And praise God He has provided for her down south close to Donovan again. Answer to prayer there! But this is something that maybe has God written all over it. So that is my prayer request this whole paragraph for God to be working in the interviews I had.... make the distinction clear on the best opportunity to work out.
