Now, it will always be Mother's Tavern to me (the days before Ash Properties owned them, and it was owned by Paul Brown). The feel has changed, and so has the food slightly.... for the better? Well you can be the judge. I think... it is a vertical change.
Last night, my friend and I were at Farmer's Market in SLO after work and decided I needed a real dinner. And we almost went to our default place for Mac and Cheese, but noticed Mo Tav also had their own.... why not?!
The bartender, Sean, was awesome. I even got a free drink out of the evening (a drink using sweet tea flavored vodka. Awesome).
Anyway, went on to order Mac and Cheese and Sweet Potato fries. I absolutely love both of these things, and not as much of a starch intake, instead of regular french fries. The food was good. The Mac and Cheese not as good as what I would have liked. But it was more authentic to what we know growing up as "Mom's homemade Mac and Cheese". It was not a pub style entree, and the price at $8.00 was a fair price for what I got. The sweet potato fries were heaven as always. So good, and the aolili sweet sauce that came with was so tasty. A real treat. The atmosphere was super busy, on the account of it being busy downtown in general. The food I would rate a B+ over all if a grade is needed for this. The service was outstanding and personable especially given the high traffic it had. So I definitely recommend it, and I am sure the other things on the menu are great. Had I not had Mac and Cheese from somewhere else I prefer ever before I would say this Mac and Cheese is pretty good. It has 3 different kinds of cheese in it, and very rich (and filling).
Now, "Mo Tav" is also one of the biggest hot spots for the young life (well legal aged of 21 and over) for San Luis Obispo and college student community. It was renovated after the ownership change, but the charm did not change much. Now with multiple LCD screens on the walls, and they still host a swing dance night (Sundays), it is a great place to be, and has the biggest dance floor of any bar in town. The usually have a cover charge of $5 for events at the door as well. They also host private events now in their upstairs area as well.
So if you are in Downtown SLO for lunch or dinner, I would definitely hit this place up! Check out the menu below :) Happy eating!
